Course/Module description:
2st Semester in Rehovot- Faculty of Agriculture.

Music from the 18th to the 20th centuries; a chronological overview from Bach to Rock and the Beatles.
Music as part of Western culture, within artistic, scientific, and social context.

An inter-disciplinary approach based on listening to representative masterpieces in different styles and acquiring familiarity with basic concepts in musical thinking.


Course/Module aims:
Familiarity with styles and major trends in western musical history from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
Encountering basic concepts in musical thinking.
Viewing music within historical and cultural context.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Enhance musical experience through listening, understanding and learning.
Distinguish between different styles.
To relate to music in a broader context.
To describe basic concepts in western music, among them musical elements, instruments and pieces from various genres. To understand the principles of music notation.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Lectures. Listening to musical pieces (including video examples). Discussion.

2. Basics of music theory: Pitch.
3. Basics of music theory: Dynamics.
4. Basics of music theory: Tone color, Timbre.
5. Basics of music theory: Rhythm.
6. History of music, The 18th century: a. Late Baroque. b.The Classical style.
7. History of music, The 19th century: The Romantic style.
8. Music and Art at the beginning of the 20th century.
9. The Musician's status in society.
10. Music, mind and soul.
11. East and West in musiс.
12. History of music: Musical styles in the 20th century (until the 60's): Jazz, and Rock.
13. The Beatles – style, influences.
