The course addresses the emergence and establishment of a distinct cultural category - folklore. The course combines reading and discussions in the history and theory of folkloristics
Course/Module aims:
Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. to compare between different approaches to folklore and folk-culture
2. to observe various practices (scholarly and others) that were tied to the emergence of folklore as a distinctive cultural category.
3. to distinguish between factors that consolidate folklore as a sustainable phenomenon and factors that are more variable.
4. to analyse practices that construct folklore as a distinct cultural category.
5. to scrutinize texts that relate to folklore - implicitly or explicitly.
