Course/Module description:
Following the introductory course given in the first half of the semester, this course surveys prominent theoretical approaches to the study of folk culture and folklore and their relationship to each other. In so doing, the course will examine the development of the field and its relationship with other academic disciplines (e.g. literature, linguistics, arts, religion studies, psychology, and anthropology). Special emphasis will be given to Jewish folklore and Israeli folk culture, which will be studied in a cross-cultural context.

Familiarization with prominent theoretical approaches in the field of folklore and folk culture.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
On successful completion of this module, students should be familiar with the basic analytical approaches in the study of folk culture and folklore and be able to analyze specific folk cultural expressions utilizing these different approaches.

Attendance requirements(%):
Although recommended, there are no attendance requirements.

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: The course is based on in-class teaching and home reading.
In addition to in-class material, the course is based on the reading of several articles that discuss specific situations and cultures. These texts will be read throughout the course in order to discover the way different scholars and schools of thought present their perspectives in specific situations. Thus, the bibliographic items represent intellectual-theoretical perspectives in folklore and folk culture research.

The study of folk culture and folklore as an academic discipline; cosmology and folk culture; the study of rituals; symbols and folk culture; feminism and folklore; folklore power and subversion; Post-Structural approaches; Post-Modernism and folk culture.
